Viburnum opulus ‘Compactum,’ or Dwarf Guelder Rose, is a deciduous shrub native to Europe and Asia. It has lobed, dark green leaves that turn red in autumn. In late spring, it blooms with clusters of white, mildly scented flowers that attract bees and butterflies. By late summer, it produces bright red berries that last into winter, providing food for birds. The shrub grows up to 1.5 meters in height and spread, thriving in moist, well-drained soil. It prefers full sun to partial shade, tolerates wind, but is less suited to coastal areas. Fully hardy, it is mildly toxic if ingested.
