Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna ‘Purple Stem,’ or Sweet Box, is an evergreen shrub from the Himalayas. It has narrow, dark green leaves and purple stems that add year-round interest. In late winter to early spring, it produces small, creamy-white flowers with a sweet scent. The flowers are followed by dark red to black berries. These blooms attract bees and bring early-season life to the garden.
Sweet Box grows to about 1 meter in height and spread. It works well in shaded borders or foundation plantings. This shrub thrives in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It prefers partial to full shade but tolerates some sun. Hardy and resilient, it withstands wind and adapts to sheltered coastal areas. With its fragrance and compact size, Sweet Box is a favourite for shaded gardens.
