Potentilla fruticosa Red Ace or Red Ace Cinquefoil, is a deciduous shrub from Northern Hemisphere regions, including Europe and Asia. It’s a hardy, compact plant with soft, green, fern-like leaves that add texture to gardens. In late spring through autumn, Red Ace produces vivid orange-red flowers that slowly fade to a soft yellow-orange. These flowers, while unscented, attract bees and butterflies, adding life to any garden.
Red Ace Cinquefoil does not produce berries. It grows to about 60 cm in height and can spread up to 90 cm, forming a neat, low-growing mound that works well in borders, rock gardens, or as a ground cover. It prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil and thrives best in full sun. However, it can tolerate partial shade, though flowering may be less prolific. This plant is also very wind-tolerant and does well in exposed areas, including coastal gardens where conditions are often harsher.
In addition to its adaptability, Red Ace is fully hardy, withstanding cold winters with minimal care. It’s drought-tolerant once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners in dry climates or windy locations. The plant is non-toxic, making it safe for gardens with pets or children.
With its bright, long-lasting blooms, compact shape, and tolerance of various conditions, Potentilla Red Ace is a versatile choice for both informal and formal gardens. It adds bold colour through much of the year, requires little care, and handles sun, wind, and even coastal conditions well. Its charm and resilience make it a favourite for gardeners looking for reliable colour and a pollinator-friendly choice in a compact shrub.
