Abelia Gold Torch, commonly known as Golden Abelia, is a vibrant, semi-evergreen shrub originally from Asia. Known for its stunning foliage, it features small, glossy leaves that emerge a golden yellow and mature to a fresh, lime green, creating year-round interest in the garden. In late spring to early autumn, Gold Torch produces small, tubular, pinkish-white flowers that are mildly fragrant. The blooms attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, adding lively movement to the garden.
Golden Abelia does not produce berries. It grows to a compact height of about 60–80 cm and spreads up to 60 cm, making it suitable for borders, containers, or as a low hedge. This shrub prefers well-drained, fertile soil and thrives in full sun, which enhances the leaf colour. It also tolerates partial shade, although this may reduce the intensity of its foliage hues.
Resilient to wind, Gold Torch performs well in exposed locations and is a good choice for coastal gardens but protect from severe coastal exposure. Hardy in mild climates, it withstands temperatures down to -10°C but may benefit from protection in colder zones. Its semi-evergreen nature means it will keep most of its leaves in milder winters, though it may lose some foliage in harsher conditions.
Golden Abelia is non-toxic, making it a safe option for gardens frequented by pets and children. Its compact growth, easy care, and eye-catching foliage make it a versatile choice for various garden styles. Whether used as a focal point, mass planting, or in containers, Abelia Gold Torch provides bright colour, pollinator attraction, and reliable structure across seasons. This plant’s adaptability to sun, wind, and mild coastal exposure makes it a great choice for low-maintenance, colourful gardens.
