The weather has cooled and the last few days have been somewhat damp for a lot of the country. After such a lovely summer it can’t help but make us think that a transition is in progress and that we should be looking ahead to autumn and…dare we say it… {whispers} winter. Yes that’s right, time seems to be up on the ‘proper’ summer of 2014, and even though lovely weather isn’t unheard of through September, if we treat any warm, sunny days as a bonus then we won’t be disappointed. 🙂
What is there to look forward to this autumn?
- Bulbs for autumn planting and spring colour are already filling shop shelves, with the ever popular daffodil, tulip, crocus, and hyacinth bulb joined by many others to give you maximum choice for 2015 spring blooms.
- The first trickle of autumn / winter bedding packs are in and starting to fill trolleys at the front of the garden centre, including popular pansy and viola packs. There will be plenty more of these as the season progresses…
- Autumn offers the best time of the year to plant for the avid gardener, as trees, shrubs, bulbs and bedding have a chance to establish their roots in the warm, moist soil, well in advance of their spring planted equivalents next year. During late autumn and winter bare root plants also provide great value opportunities for the garden.
- Birds and other wildlife start to rely on the ‘human hand’ for help as weather conditions change through autumn and winter. Getting involved in such care can be very rewarding for the ‘human hand’ as well as those it helps!
- Start the Christmas shopping early! Our extensive gift and homeware department is popular all year round but really comes into its own in the run up to Christmas and over the Christmas period. Avoid a last minute panic and enjoy a leisurely shop over the next few months… promise we won’t disappoint!
So yes, summer may be leaving us, but we all have PLENTY to look forward to this autumn!
