Our succulent and drought tolerant plants are just that - able to survive in a water restricted environment, and tolerate hot sunny conditions with no adverse effects. Succulents combat these desert-like conditions in a variety of ways depending on the type of plant. Some have fleshy, water retentive leaves or stems, others hairs or a waxy/powdery surface to resist heat and retain moisture.
A big must for succulents is very good drainage, achieved in heavy soils by adding organic matter and plenty of grit. Succulents make excellent maintenance free tub or pot plants and can often be a very striking focal point in a garden with their interesting leaves.
