Fuchsia magellanica Alba

Fuchsia magellanica Alba

A great informal hedge in mild areas

A large, hardy deciduous shrub with an upright, vigorous growth habit. In milder areas it can be grown as a hedge, reaching a height of 1.8-2.4m/6-8ft within a few years if planted around 60cm/2ft apart, and an optimum height in the region of 3m/10ft. Hard pruning in spring after susceptibility to frosts has passed, will keep this shrub smaller if required.

Its bushy green foliage is complemented by striking, free flowering white blooms, with a whisper of pink/mauve in late summer. If grown in an area prone to frost, it should be sheltered from cold, drying winds. Application of a deep winter mulch will help prevent drying and provide protection from wide temperature fluctuations. The fuchsia should be grown in a fertile, moist but well drained soil in full sun to part shade.
