Elaeagnus x ebbingei is a fast growing evergreen, hardy, salt-wind tolerant hedging plant that will even grow very close to the sea. It produces fragrant, creamy white flowers in autumn, followed by small red fruits in spring if a pollinator such as Elaeagnus Limelight is planted nearby. From our experience it seems to fruit best in full sun on poor soils.
If fed with a good slow release fertiliser like Trevena Cross Fertiliser, it will grow 60-90cm/2-3ft once established, with an ultimate height of up to 4m/13ft (although can of course be trimmed to 1.5-2.5m/5-8ft or whatever height you require).
They should be planted 60-90cm/2-3ft apart from one another - although they can be planted further apart if you do not mind waiting longer for them to form a solid hedge. You may want to position these very economical smaller plants just a little closer together than the bigger 5ltr versions, so that the wait is reduced.
It will grow well in any well drained soil, even poor, dry soils, as it is particularly drought tolerant, and can be positioned in anything from full sun to heavy shade.
