An exotic evergreen shrub (height around 3m/9.8ft, spread 2.5m/8.2ft) from New Zealand with large deep green leaves that can reach up to 20cm/8 inches long. In the summer, large clusters of tiny greenish white flowers hang below the leaves for added interest, though it is the foliage of this plant that is the real attraction. It grows best when the roots are cool so it should be mulched well, and is an excellent plant for creating an exotic look, as a cracking jungle plant. It should be grown in rich fertile soil that is moist but well drained, and positioned in full sun or partial shade. It is hardy down to around -8oC degrees once established, though should be protected from frosts through very cold winters especially when juvenile.
